The theater was built during the boom of the rubber industry in Manaus. It opened in 1896. Nearly all material for the theater was brought from Europe. The building is crowned with a cupola inlaid with 36,000 ceramic imported tiles that are painted the colors of the Brazilian flag. By 1910 the Manaus rubber industry was destroyed by Asian competition. The rubber barons moved back to Europe and the theater sat in ruins until in recent years the theater has been resurrected. Photos were taken in and around the theater.
