In July 2013 I traveled to Jackson WY to attend a starry night photography workshop taught by Salt Lake City photographer Royce Bair. Royce has been teaching photo workshops in some of the most picturesque locations in the southwest for several years. There were 10 photographers attending the workshop coming from as far away as FL. They were all seasoned and well traveled photographers who were looking for another photography format to add to their expertise. The typical day might start at 3 in the afternoon for a couple hours of post production discussion after which we would head to the various photos sites for sunset and starry night photos. Once the sun was starting to come up we would move on to early morning photography and the day might end at 9 that morning. In addition to instructions on camera settings used for milky way time exposure photography, Royce showed us how to light paint trees, buildings with a variety of hand held lights. Using the subtle light painting technique allowed us to expose for the milky way and at the same time light closer objects. With the milky way blazing and objects being light painted, it was easy to forget it was 3 in the morning. Thanks to Royce, veryone walked away from the workshop with a keen understanding of long time exposure photography and great photos.
